COOMA Hospital is now home to a new state-of-the-art Emergency Department (ED), with Member for Monaro Nichole Overall and minister for Regional Health Bronnie Taylor joining members of the wider community to celebrate the official opening in late July.
The expanded ED is part of Cooma Hospital's $24 million redevelopment that includes a new maternity department, new ambulatory care centre and expanded medical imaging department.
Staff and patients will benefit from the larger space, improved treatment spaces and upgraded equipment.
Member for Monaro Nichole Overall said the new and improved ED represents a key milestone in the delivery of the NSW Government’s $24 million Cooma Hospital redevelopment.
“The expansion of the Cooma ED provides the hospital with additional capacity to meet the current and future health needs of the community,” Mrs Overall said.
“The new department is much larger than the original, and includes improved treatment spaces, as well as upgraded equipment, and will help the emergency team to continue to deliver outstanding healthcare with even greater efficiency.”
Minister for Regional Heath Bronnie Taylor said this project is another example of the NSW Nationals in Government’s commitment to ensuring that everyone in our state has access to high-quality health care close to home.
“Having spent much of my working life at Cooma Hospital, I know this new ED will make a huge difference to the lives of our health workers and community alike,” Mrs Taylor said.
“Today is an exciting day for our community and a testament to the hard work of those who championed this life-changing project.”
The Cooma Hospital redevelopment is part of the NSW Government’s record $11.9 billion investment in health infrastructure over four years to 2025-26, with nearly a third of the health infrastructure projects being delivered in regional and rural health areas of the state.
Other major projects being delivered across South-eastern NSW include:
• $260 million project to develop the new Eurobodalla Regional Hospital
• $20 million for a new community health centre in Batemans Bay
• $165 million redevelopment of Goulburn Base Hospital – final works are expected to be completed mid-2023
Since 2011, the government has delivered more than 180 hospitals and health facilities across NSW, with more than 130 currently underway – of those, more than 90 are in rural and regional areas.
