SUPERLATIVES have been flowing in for the new Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail which has been a huge hit plus a welcome tourism addition to the region since officially opening in April 2020.
The $5 million invested by the NSW Government for the 22km pilot trail has been money extremely well spent. It has proved an economic boom for some local businesses with both towns noticing an increase for their economy.
The trail starts just on the edge of Tumbarumba and is easily accessed from town or drive to the trail head. The sealed trail offers a scenic countryside ride between the two towns and is suited for riding or walking.
One of the key benefits of the trail is its gentle gradient being inclusive for all riders to enjoy the old rail line and along the journey partake in a history lesson of the region. With interpretive signage, crossing restored trestle bridges and former rail stations of Tumbarumba, Glenroy, Rosewood and Wolsely Station, there is that added charm for the journey.
The community has offered great support of the trail, with the local Men’s Shed group volunteering much of the labor to beautify the trail along the route.
The rail trail includes historical displays and features four restored trestle bridges that were part of the original rail line between Tumbarumba and Wagga Wagga.
The trail will eventually have bike service areas and toilet facilities along the trail.
Depending on which side you start, you will find a perfect stop at either end for lunch, snacks, and drinks. At Rosewood, the Gone Barny café is ideal for lunch and in Tumbarumba you will find cafes and the Tumbarumba Bakery on the main street for the best pies, bacon and egg rolls, coffee and drinks for when your ride ends.
Call at the visitor centre for more information and printed maps and book well ahead to rent E-bikes from Blooms and Bikes as the demand has been strong for hire.
