Climb Mt Kosciuszko via Thredbo

For the ultimate bucket list experience travellers can hike to the country's highest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko and stand at the top of Australia at 2228m.

The shortest route to the top is via Thredbo, and the Mt Kosciuszko Summit Hike is a pilgrimage that every Australian and visitor to this great land should make. Gain perspective from the highest point in the country whilst you take in the sweeping views of the stunning Main Range.

It's an easy option for couples, solo hikers and families alike to explore the rooftop of Australia. You don't need to be an advanced hiker to do this grade three hike, which is a return distance total of 13 kilometres.

Simply purchase a chair ride, take the chair to Eagles Nest restaurant and follow the dedicated path all the way to the top allowing 4-5 hours depending on your fitness levels.

The combined rock path and elevated grated walkway is easy to follow with plenty of scenic stops along the route.

Thredbo also offers a series of Guided Hikes with a passionate group of guides, who know Thredbo and the Australian Main Range like the back of their hand, providing guests with unique insights on the local flora and fauna. Thredbo transforms into a hiking mecca in summer with more than 20 guided and self-guided hikes on offer to showcase the best of alpine Australia.

Chair tickets can be purchased from the ticket office, and arrive early during holiday periods.

Alpine Hiking Tips

Always look at weather forecast and understand the weather is always cooler at the top and often much more windy.

Pack a backpack with water, food and snacks and an extra layer.

Long sleeves and pants keep the annoying flies at bay.

Wear a hat and sunscreen.

Allow enough time on the return journey to catch the last chair back to Thredbo Village.
