The Snowy Discovery Centre in Cooma presents a wealth of memorabilia and information on the mighty Snowy Scheme.
Here you can explore the past, present and future with a variety of experiences.
Take a virtual flyover of the Snowy Mountains and see the Snowy Scheme in this virtual flight in the state of art immersive theatre and 14 metre wide screen. The fly over is a great way to start your exploration, firstly seeing it here on the big screen and then explore for the rest of your holidays on your drive through the region.
Take a walk through the Discovery Centre to see a great collection of iconic photos from the building of the scheme, old artifacts and even try and make electricity yourself on the exercise bike.
The Snowy Scheme was a huge project, an engineering feat on grand proportions and is still greatly admired today.
Snowy Hydro is a major part of the region's fabric, and it employs many people in all towns across the Snowy Mountains. At the Discovery Centre you can watch in real time exactly what is pumping, where water is flowing and how much energy each of the power stations are generating.
There is also a wealth of information on the current Snowy 2.0 project, which is being built now at Lobs Hole in the Kosciuszko National Park. Feeling hungry, you can browse the memorabilia and then dine in at the relaxing cafe that serves coffee, snacks and lunch. Choose from homemade pies and sausage rolls, fresh sandwiches and great barista made coffee. There is outside dining on the lawns ideal for the kids, and air conditioned cafe.
The Discovery Centre has free WiFi, a rechargeable phone station and newly acquired electric car charging stations.
During your travels, you can also visit the Khancoban Visitor Information Centre and see the display inside the Talbingo Supermarket, plus see in person dams purposely built for the scheme.
