SELWYN Snow Resort has officially been opened by the NSW Premier Chris Minns, the Premier in attendance in July with resort officials and other guests to unveil the commemorative Selwyn Centre Plaque.
As the Premier unveiled the plaque, he expressed his appreciation for Selwyn Snow Resort's contribution to the region's tourism and recreational opportunities.
“A big congratulations on this amazing triumph of re-opening Selwyn the peoples ski resort. It’s an opportunity for families to come and enjoy this wonderful pastime,” said Mr Minns.
“I think it’s important to note that after the devastation of the bush fires from my perspective people look at a devastated area and think the rebuild comes down to dollars and cents on a spread sheet.”
“More often than not its business leaders deciding whether or not reopening places like Selwyn make economic sense. This is a huge investment in capital from Kevin and Lucy and it’s almost a triumph of imagination in terms of what’s possible to reinvest in the local community.”
Selwyn now embarks on a new chapter, the 2023 season in full swing and guests returning to the ski and snowboard, visit the new Selwyn Centre and slide at the new dedicated toboggan area (see pages 34-35).
Resort owner Kevin Blyton said what we are all about is offering affordable skiing to beginners and families.
“Our Chief Operations Officer (COO) Josh Elliot came to me after the fires and said everything is gone, what are we going to do. I said the insurance money would be nice. He said no we need to rebuild something bigger and better and that’s exactly what he’s done,” said Mr Blyton.
“It's been a difficult few years with covid and the fires as well as the re-build. We settled with the insurance company on 15 million, considerably less than we were insured for. Westpac fronted up with another 16 million so we will be at 31 million before we are finished.”
“It’s a great day for Selwyn, the Snowy Mountains and the Blyton Group.”
