The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has confirmed that curler Tahli Gill, the arriving Australian athlete who tested positive on the weekend has now twice tested negative and will resume normal Games preparation.
Tahli Gill and her teammate Dean Hewitt have both been in isolation for the past two days after Gill returned a positive test on arrival at Beijing Airport and issued a joint statement on the news of the negative test today.
“We are greatly relieved as a team, that goes without saying. But importantly for us both as a team, this experience is not going to define our Olympic campaign. We have treated this time as a rest day and a time to really focus on our Olympic goals. We look forward to representing Australia with pride and making history for our sport," said the athletes.
Tahli contracted COVID a number of weeks ago while training in Canada and had tested negative before travel in line with Beijing Games Playbook protocols, indicating she was at the end of the infection cycle.
AOC Chef de Mission Geoff Lipshut says he’s delighted with the good news and the positive attitude of the curling pair.
“They have dealt with this extremely well and we are very proud of them. Now they can resume their preparation for the start of competition on Wednesday. We are looking forward to Tahli and Dean becoming our very first curling Olympians,” Mr Lipshut concluded.
