Mt Perisher Double Chair To Be Auctioned

THE Mount Perisher double chairlift which was decommissioned this past summer will have 70 of its original iconic chairs auctioned off on the 2024 June long weekend.

Installed in 1961 and Perisher’s first ever chairlift, the two-seater fixed grip chairlift has been a faithful means of transport, and a favourite ride for millions of skiers and snowboarders during the decades.

Since its removal there has been huge interest from people reminiscing about their association with the chairlift, and now wishing to acquire chairs for their own nostalgic purpose.

Perisher Ski Resort will offer guests the opportunity to own a slice of ski history at a special June long weekend farewell auction for the historic chairs.

Seventy of the original chairs will be sold in two separate auctions with all proceeds going to charities. Guests are encouraged to register in advance for a chance to secure their own chair.

“We can’t wait to welcome guests back to Perisher for the opening weekend of the 2024 snow season. This farewell auction will provide a wonderful way to think about the history we have at Australia’s largest ski resort,” said Nathan Butterworth, General Manager of Perisher Ski Resort.

“This special auction will allow Perisher history to be preserved, especially as we look towards welcoming the new Mt Perisher 6, with a planned opening in the 2025 snow season. We are proud that the proceeds from the auction will benefit local charities and organisations that make a difference for the environment, here in our community, and for our youth.”

The Mt Perisher double chair will not be seen like this again.

Local auctioneer Nick Kirshner will auction off the first batch of chairs live on Saturday at Perisher. A former ski racer himself, Nick said he had lots of fond memories of the chairlift.

“I started out as a youngster and training with the Perisher race club. Plenty of good times were had up there and it’s an end of an era,” said Nick.

The auction will be an exciting start to the long weekend at Perisher which includes live entertainment with the Peak Music Festival.

The Mt Perisher chair has been decommissioned to make way for the high-speed, “Mt Perisher 6” seater chairlift. Ground works have commenced prior to winter 2024, and the new chair will be in operation in winter 2025.

For the 2024 season, guests will still be able to access all the same runs and terrain on Mt Perisher, the triple chair will still be operational.
