Media Release from John Barilaro
Friday October 23
A team of experienced town planners, urban designers, engineers and scientists will come together over the next month to bring the Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct to life, hear community feedback and draft the precinct’s master plan.
Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Member for Monaro John Barilaro said the ‘Enquiry by Design’ workshops and community pop-up sessions scheduled throughout October and November are integral to the success of the draft master plan.
“We are going to create new jobs, drive year-round tourism and enhance the Snowy Mountains’ appeal as an amazing place to live and visit,” Mr Barilaro said.
“Due to COVID-19, we haven’t been able to get out to speak to the community face-to-face about what they want to see in this draft master plan, so I’m happy we can do that now in a COVID-safe way at Nuggets Crossing.
“The Special Activation Precinct team will be there on Tuesday 27 October and Wednesday 28 October. I encourage everyone to go and chat to them about the program, share what you love about this region and where you think the biggest opportunities are for a strong future in the Snowy Mountains.
“We will also have two ‘Enquiry by Design’ workshops – the first from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October to focus on the town centre, and the second from Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12 November which will look at resorts.”
A data visualisation team will create digital 3D models of the precinct during the workshops to show how proposed roads, water management infrastructure, transport connections and potential future land uses could work in real-time.
(Note: the Enquiry by Design workshops are for planners and key agencies working on the SAP draft plan, not for public attendance)
“We’ve always said we want to be bold with this precinct, so this technology will help us to assess pretty quickly whether a connecting road, airport or new hotel will work in one place over another, or anywhere at all,” Mr Barilaro said.
The Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct will target tourism industries to create a year-round tourism destination and jobs for the local economy. Details for the upcoming community engagement sessions are:
