Snowy Monaro Regional Councillors have this afternoon elected a new mayor for the remaining 12 months of Council’s term of office.
At an Extraordinary Council Meeting two nominations were put forward, Councillor Peter Beer and Councillor James Ewart.

Councillor Peter Beer was elected as the new Mayor.

Councillor Lynley Miners and Councillor John Castelari both nominated for deputy Mayor with Councillor Lynley Miners re-elected as deputy Mayor.

Mayor Beer thanked the outgoing Mayor John Rooney and said that the council had a big job ahead in the next 12 months.

Mayor Beer said, “I would rather try and work with people, talk to them and try and come to some conclusion rather than conflict. But if we have to, we will obviously have to go down that path. But I would like to think that we can talk about things and get it done, rather than conflict.”

“I look forward to working with the staff, and with you especially Mr General Manager, we can get these things going and I think we’ve got a great future, we have a lot to do and lot to tie down in the next 12 months, let’s get on with it right across the whole shire, no particular area.”

Snowy Monaro Regional Council General Manager, Peter Bascomb, congratulated the Mayor and Deputy Mayor on their appointments.

“I’d like to wish Councillor Beer and Councillor Miners the very best for their one- year term as Mayor and Deputy Mayor,” Mr Bascomb said.

The next local government elections will be held in September 2020.
